Strawberry lime compote spooned over vanilla ice cream

Strawberry Lime Compote

This strawberry compote is better than a sauce. It’s cooked just long enough to bring the ingredients together and warm the berries through while still leaving their shape intact. What we love about a compote is that it’s made right before serving, so it tastes fresh and vibrant. It takes about five minutes, and that’s it. Spoon it over ice cream, cake, scones, or yogurt for a delicious (and quick) dessert.

Tip

— Fresh strawberries work best here. Frozen berries release more liquid and soften quickly, resulting in a sauce rather than a compote.

Strawberry Lime Compote

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled and cut into halves or quarters, depending on size
  • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Pinch of cinnamon

Directions

Place all the ingredients in a skillet and warm through on medium heat, stirring until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to med-low and simmer 4 to 5 minutes, uncovered. Serve warm or at room temperature.
